Grounding is a term used to describe being fully present in your mind and body and firmly connected to the Earth. When working with Universal energy (Spirit guides, Angel and Arch Angels), you can become lightheaded, dizzy, tired, shaky, feel vague and disconnected if you are not grounded.
A grounding technique is used to keep your mind and body anchored into the Earth so you can fully function. Grounding exercises can be short or long activities, and there is no ‘wrong’ way to ground yourself. Experiment with different techniques to find out what works best for you. We will be looking at physical and mental techniques you can use.
Here are some physical grounding exercises you can use every day:
- Using mindfulness – Going into nature, laying on the grass, walking barefoot on the beach, or tuning into the sounds or smells around you.
- Potting plants, digging in the garden, landscaping, touching trees or placing your hands in soil, sand, or on pebbles at the beach.
- Laughter, dancing, stretching, talking to yourself, humming, or singing a favourite song. Try clapping your hands to a rhythm, stamping your feet or jumping up and down.
- Get up and walk around at work if you find your mind wandering.
- Centre in your heart space to help you to focus and ground your energy.
- Water is an earth element and can assist us to focus and ground ourselves. Try swimming in fresh or saltwater, standing under a cool shower, running cold water over your hands or splashing water on your face and feel the instant wake up and connection. Healers will quite often wash their hands in between working with clients as a bacterial cleanse and also as a grounding process.
Physical items to help with grounding:
- Carrying grounding stones such as jasper, hematite, agate, or tourmaline.
- Taking Red Lilly Australian Bush Flower Essence.
- Flicking an elastic or rubber band on your wrist. That is an instant wake up,
- Burning essential oils can assist with grounding. There are a variety of essential oils which are very earthy in their scents, such as patchouli, sandalwood, cedarwood or ylang ylang.
- Grounding by using earthing mats, sheets, or wearing earthing socks.
Mental exercises for grounding:
- Visualise tree roots coming out of the soles of your feet and going deep down into the earth. Some people visualise the roots going to crystal caves deep in the earth. You can visualise yourself sliding deep into the centre of the Earth and giving Mother Nature a great big hug.
- Focussing on a repetitive sound like a clock ticking, a bell ringing or your voice while counting backwards.
- Visualising an energy cord from your base chakra going into the earth and wrapping itself around tree roots, a large crystal or rock. The cord can be green or brown, both are earthy colours. I know a man who uses visualisation of an anchor for his grounding technique; to him, an anchor is heavy and solid and this image works for him.
- Centring in your heart space is another quick and easy grounding technique.
By finding a simple grounding technique you can do every day, you will feel a noticeable difference in your energy levels and your mental focus.
